Wine, stocks of Italian wineries fall below 50 million hectolitres

The wine stocks of the wine cellars of the Belpaese region have fallen below 50 million hectolitres: on 31 May 2019 there were 49.6 million hectolitres of wine planted, of which 24.9 were PDO, 12.7 were PGI and 11.8 were varietal and generic wines, according to the latest update of the “Bollettino Cantina Italia” of the Icqrf, based on data from the telematic register. 12.3 million hectolitres are in the possession of Veneto, 6 of Emilia Romagna, 5.1 of Tuscany, 4.9 of Puglia, 4.1 of Piedmont, and 3.4 of Sicily, to stay on the “richest” regions. With 3.3 million hectolitres in the cellar, Prosecco Doc is the most abundant denomination, ahead of Igt Terre Siciliane (1.5), Doc delle Venezie (1.46) and Igt Puglia (1.42), and then gradually, over a million hectolitres follow Igt Veneto, Igt Toscana, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Doc, Doc Sicilia, Chianti Docg and Igt Salento. Under one million hectolitres, on the other hand, are the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Docg (776,882 hectolitres), the Chianti Classico Docg (762,524) and the Igt Rubicone (753,265).
