Prosecco Doc, requested the storage of part of the production to manage the market

Possibility to set aside 16% of production to manage possible repercussions on markets from situations such as Brexit or U.S. Duties

Prosecco Doc continues to plan its future and to put in place tools to manage the offer: after having “reclassified” over 600.000 hectolitres of the Prosecco reserve to “white wine with or without a geographical indication”, the meeting of the members of the Consorzio di Tutela del Prosecco Doc, explains a note, gave a mandate to the president, Stefano Zanette, with almost unanimous vote, to ask the Regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia “the activation of the storage measure, until December 31, 2020” of productions suitable for the claim of the DOC from the harvest 2019, which exceed 150 quintals per hectare (or 90 for vineyards in the second cycle of vegetation).

In other words, it is the decision to set aside 16% of the normal production of 180 quintals per hectare to face a possible loss dictated by political and economic reasons (Brexit case or US duties, which are the two main markets of the DOC).

In the meantime, the data available to the Consortium follow the direction suggested by the studies, and if the United Kingdom confirms its position as a market leader in terms of volumes, it is, instead, the United States the leader in terms of value.

The decision to keep the stored goods or to make them available to cope with an increase in production, always in the light of considerations on price trends, must be taken by 31 December.

“The reasons behind the choice - said Zanette - have been understood by all”. The Consortium is also working on a forthcoming proposal according to which it will not be possible to market the production of the vintage before the following 1st January.
