After waiting seven years in the wings, the Roca brothers Joan, Joseph and Jordi took the top step on the podium in the ranking "The World's 50 Best Restaurants", sponsored by S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna and organized by the British magazine Restaurant. The press and fans around the world have long praised El Celler de Can Roca in Gerona as one of the most exciting places to have a food experience. After two years in second place, El Celler rises to the top, ousting the Danish restaurant Noma, which had been first in the standings from 2010 until last year and has now taken the silver medal. For the Roca brothers, authentic stars, the restaurant is a family affair: in 1920 their grandparents Joan and Angeleta opened a small restaurant in San Martí de Llémena.
In 1967 their parents Josep and Montserrat inaugurated the Can Roca in Gerona. El Celler opened its doors in 1986, alongside the “spartan” family restaurant. It’s a minimalist shell, and has shaped technique after technique to position itself among the top restaurants in the world. They were soon awarded two Michelin stars, which then became three in 2010, and the second place ranking of the 50 Best in early 2011. Imaginative, avant-garde, techno-emotional, writes the great Spanish critic Pau Arenos, defining the cuisine of El Celler, one of 4 Spanish restaurants (there are 29 European restaurants) on the chart. Spain takes top position but Italy has many reasons to celebrate this year. After five editions in the standings, Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana in Modena with its cuisine that spans centuries of Italian tradition revisited through modern age lenses gained two positions on the podium. The Calandre di Rubano headed by the Alajmo brothers, Massimiliano and Raffaele, jumped 5 positions, coming in 27th place. Davide Scabin’s Combal.Zero in Rivoli makes its return to the ranking in 40th place among the 50 Best debut while the restaurant Piazza Duomo in Alba with chef Enrico Crippa debuts at position 41.
Another important result for Italy is the 2013 Veuve Clicquot World’s Best Female Chef award that Nadia Santini of the restaurant Dal Pescatore in Canneto won this year. France boasts six restaurants in the standings; the first - the Arpege in Paris – is 16th. All the other restaurants lost positions in the ranking except for a new entry (Septime in Paris) coming in at position number 49. The 2013 Lifetime Achievement was awarded to the great Alain Ducasse The British contingent remains unchanged. Last year the restaurant Dinner was at the highest new entry position and this year it jumped two position and is ranked 7th. Brett Graham’s o The Ledbury went up one position, to number 13, while The Fat Duck by Heston Blumenthal is ranked 33rd. Excellent results for South America that boasts six restaurants in the top 50, including the Peruvian Astrid Y Gaston, which climbed 21 positions up to 14, by winning the Highest Climber award and Alex Atala of DOM in 6th place. Following the success of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants Awards, which was announced for the first time last spring in Singapore, Asia now has seven restaurants in the world rankings, including the Narisawa in Tokyo who won best position - 20th place - and the Sustainable restaurant award, the prize given to the restaurant that got the highest rating for environmental and social responsibility. With six restaurants in the standings, the United States once again demonstrate the presence of its weight on the international level. The highest position in the standings is Eleven Madison Park in New York in 5th place. The Chefs' Choice Award, recognition that the chefs in the ranking award to the most esteemed colleague, went to Grant Achatz of Alinea in Chicago, in position number 15. The Australian restaurant Attica was awarded the Highest New Entry debuting at position 21 in the standings. The One To Watch Award, awarded to the restaurant that could be the most successful in the future, went to the South African restaurant The Test Kitchen opened in Cape Town by the British-born chef Luke Dale-Roberts.
The ranking The World's 50 Best Restaurants was based on the votes of the Diners Club ® World's 50 Best Restaurants Academy. The group consists of more than 900 international leaders in the restaurant industry (food critics, chefs, restaurateurs and gourmets). The Academy is made up of representatives of 26 macro regions of the world, each of which is composed of a jury of 36 members. Each member has seven votes and of these at least three must be assigned to restaurants located outside their region of expertise. The members list their choices in order of preference, according to their experience in the various restaurants during the eighteen months prior to the vote.
