Global wine exports have slowed down in volume and value in the first half of 2026

As numerous news reports have continued to confirm almost daily, and as numbers from the major wine producing countries have shown, international trade on the global wine market in the first half of 2026 has shown a continuing slowdown. In 2025, even though the year was challenged by wars, tariffs, and inflation, it nevertheless held its own. At mid year, instead, the overall drop in global exports was -5.1% in value, totaling 15.8 billion euros (835 million euros less), and 8.1% in volume at 4.2 billion liters (less 379.1 million liters), compared to the first half of 2025. These figures were taken from customs data in various countries, provided by Trade Data Monitor and analyzed by the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organization (OIVE). The analysis specified that packaged wine, which is the most widely traded category globally, totaled 10,626.7 million euros (-6.1%) and 2,242.1 million liters (-5.3%), and is driving the overall decline. It registered 692.3 million euros less and 124.5 million liters less compared to the first half of 2025. Bulk wines have registered global trade losses totaling 154.7 million euros and 234.1 million liters, totaling 1,100.7 million euros(-12.3%) and 1,378.2 million liters (-14.5%). Bag-in-box wines as well registered a negative trend, losing 3% in value (dropping to 334.8 million euros) and 2.4% in volume (down 170.6 million liters).
Sparkling wines, instead, went against the trend, although they were basically stable. They registered 0.5% increase in value (€3.7 billion euros) and -0.6% decrease in volume (476.5 million liters).
As far as the leading producer and exporter nations, France stayed in the top spot in terms of value, at 5.4 billion euros (2.2% drop, signifying 119.8 million euros less). Italy was the leading exporter in volume (986.4 million liters, -4%) and the second-largest in value. However, according to the OIVE analysis, Italy sustained the greatest loss in absolute terms (238.2 million euros, -6.2%). In terms of percentage, Spain (-8.2%), New Zealand (-11.7%), Chile (-15.3%), and the United States (-18.9%) registered the most significant losses.
