“Cantina Italia” wine stocks are starting to drop: 59.2 million hectoliters at the end of February

Wine stocks in Italian wineries have started to drop. The “Cantina Italia Bulletin” number 4 on the electronic register data revealed that as of February 28, 2019, there are 59.2 million hectoliters in stock, compared to 60.1 on February 15th. There are 29.2 million hectoliters of PDO wines, 15.3 of PGI and 14.6 of varietal and generic wines. One liter of Italian wine out of four (14.7 million hectoliters) is in the wine cellars in Veneto, double those of the second richest Italian region, Emilia Romagna (7.5 million hectoliters), ahead of Puglia (6.3), Tuscany (5.4), Piedmont (4.5) and Sicily (4.3).
Prosecco DOC is the leader of wines with denomination and geographical indication, at 4.2 million hectoliters in the cellars, ahead of the Delle Venezie as well as the Terre Siciliane wines, both at 1.8 million hectoliters of stocks. Then, follow TGI Puglia (1.7) and TGI Veneto (1.6), ahead of DOC Sicilia, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and TGI Toscana, counting 1.4 million hectoliters each, ahead of TGI Salento and Chianti DOCG, at 1.3 million hectoliters.
