The consumption of wine in Italian restaurants is growing

It is only the end of April, but it is already, strangely enough, time for the first appraisals in the Italian wine world, especially for consumption outside the home. Data from CDA - Food Distributor Consortium, which brings together 100 beverage distribution companies that work with 83.000 restaurants, wine bars, etc. throughout Italy and analyzes market trends every three months through the “Osserva Beverage” observatory has revealed that in the December 2018 - February 2019 quarter, purchases of wine in Italy grew in value + 3.6%, while volumes decreased -1.78%. the performance of the HO.RE.CA. channel, on the other hand, is quite different because growth in value remained stable at + 6.19%, and just -0.01% in terms of volumes. Evening leisure activities achieved the best performance out of the various sectors: + 13.5% in value and + 4.4% in volume. The restaurant business also performed very well, as wine sales went up + 8.26% in value and 1.4% in volume, while consumption in Italy’s wine bars grew 2.65% in value, ehilr volumes fell -2.23%. Considering the different typologies, white wines showed + 3.55% in value and -2.39% in volume, red wines + 5% in value and -1.73% in volume and rosé wines + 15.26% in value and -3.56% in volume. Bubbles deserve a separate analysis. Dry sparkling wines grew 1.64% in value and +1% in volume, while sweet sparkling wines dropped -17% in value and -20.98% in volume. Champagne, however, did better: + 8.36% in value and +1.95% in volume.
