One hundred and thirty one Italian wineries have been selected to participate in “Opera Wine” 2025 (same issue as the 2024 edition), the prestigious tasting organized by the US magazine “Wine Spectator” that per tradition will be a prologue to Vinitaly in Verona (on April 5). The list of Italian wineries selected was one of the highlights unveiled recently at the “Wine2Wine” Business Forum by Veronafiere and Vinitaly (taking place at Veronafiere). Some of the wineries selected include: Piedmont’s Barolo and the excellent wines of the Langhe, brands such as Ceretto and Cogno, Bruno Giacosa and G.B. Burlotto, Luciano Sandrone, Pio Cesare and Prunotto. Franciacorta, and its symbolic wineries such as Bellavista, Ca’ del Bosco and Berlucchi; Oltrepò Pavese, Conte Vistarino, Valtellina, Nino Negri; Trentino Alto Adige, Ferrari and Terlano, San Leonardo and Elena Walch; Friuli Venezia Giulia, Jermann; the historic names of Veneto wine, such as Prosecco, Amarone, Valpolicella and more, Allegrini and Bertani, Zenato and Masi, Cesari and Anselmi, Dal Forno and Tedeschi, Tommasi, Zymè and Bussola; Liguria, Cantine Lunae Bosoni. Marchesi Antinori and Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, historic wine families of Tuscany (the leading Region, followed by Piedmont and Veneto, ed.), to the icons of Bolgheri, Tenuta San Guido, Ornellaia and Le Macchiole; Chianti Classico, Castello di Albola (Zonin1821) and Castello di Ama, Rocca delle Macìe and Castello di Monsanto, Castello di Volpaia and Fontodi, Isole & Olena, Mazzei and Lamole di Lamole, Brunello di Montalcino, Biondi-Santi and Castello Banfi, Argiano and Casanova di Neri, Altesino and Canalicchio di Sopra, Carpineto and San Filippo, and wineries such as Tenuta Sette Ponti and Tenuta di Trinoro. Umbria, historic Caprai and Lungarotti; Marche, Umani Ronchi; Abruzzi, Masciarelli; Lazio, Famiglia Cotarella; Campania, names such as Feudi di San Gregorio and Quintodecimo; Apulia, Gianfranco Fino and Tormaresca; Sicily, brands such as Planeta and Donnafugata, Tasca d’Almerita and Cusumano, Benanti, Graci and Pietradolce, and Sardinia, Argiolas.
“This will be the 13th edition of “OperaWine”, and the very successful partnership between Vinitaly and “Wine Spectator”, where we want to showcase the excellent quality of Italian wine. Bruce Sanderson and I”, Alison Napjus, tasting director of “Wine Spectator” (who we interviewed in a video that will be online in the next few days) told WineNews, “blind taste over 25.000 Italian wines every year. We look for quality in the glass; however, quality is not enough to choose the wineries of “OperaWine”, which is always a great challenge for us. The value of the winery for that Region counts as well as the ability to show diversity. There are more than 130 wineries represented in 20 Regions. To narrate the diversity of Italian wines, each year some wineries will leave the list, and then perhaps come back, and others instead will be put on the list. Italian wine has many stories to tell. It is important to take into account that consumption is now moving towards less quantity, but higher value. However”, Alison Napjus explained, “this does not mean that producers must raise all prices. There are also many consumers who are looking for a great quality-price ratio in bottles, such as those around 25 US dollars on the shelf, which is one of Italy’s greatest strengths”. “Opera Wine” is the symbolic event that celebrates Italian wine as the “wine dream” par excellence around the world, especially, for the everlasting passion that American consumers have for our wines, which makes the USA the number one market of Italian wine exports. Once again, on April 5, 2025 in Verona, on the eve of the Vinitaly event (April 6-9), the wineries “Wine Spectator” selected will be the stars of the most prestigious tasting held in Italy by the famous American magazine.
