There are thousands of Varieties of grape vines all over the world. But there is one that is by far, the most common, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, 290.091 hectares planted around the world, followed by Merlot, at 267.169 hectares, and the Spanish Airen grape variety (20 years ago, according to the report, it was the most widely planted variety in the world), at 252.364 hectares, according to a study by the University of Adelaide (Australia). The study (data pertain to the situation up to 2010, ed., www.adelaide.edu.au/wine-econ/databases/winegrapes/), funded by the Grape and Wine Research Development Corporation, has investigated 44 producing countries, 521 regions and 1.271 different grape varieties.
According to the study, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have more than doubled their "vineyard share" since 1990, climbing to the top of the standings. Rounding out the "top 5" of the most common varieties are Tempranillo 252.364 hectares, and Chardonnay, 232.561 hectares. The study also revealed that overall there are 4 million 601 thousand 445 hectares of vineyards in the sample countries. Spain, France and Italy alone are worth 54% of the world's vineyard that fell 6% between 2000 and in 2010. In that same period of time, the red varieties planted exceeded the white and are 55% of the total.
And what about Italy? A look at the Australian report reveals many confirmations in the vineyards of Italy but also some surprises. By far the most cultivated grape, needless to say, is Sangiovese, at 71.619 hectares, more than double Montepulciano (34.824 ha) and Catarratto White (34.794 ha), who completed the podium. Rounding out the top 5 most grown varieties in Italy, there are Merlot, at 28.042 hectares and Trebbiano Toscano, at 21.501. Not in the top "30" most grown varieties in Italy is one of the most important, Nebbiolo. There is also the curious presence of vines such as Tribidrag (12.234 hectares), an ancient grape of Croatian origin at position 15. There are many varieties grown in less than 5 acres, if not in just one acre, like Maiolina, Ruggine, Paolina, Uvalino, Gosen, Ripolo, Perla dei Vivi, Canaiolo Rosa, Lecinaro, Sanforte and Orpicchio. In total, there are 625.700 hectares of vineyards in Italy.
