An enormous interactive database of global wine terroirs, mapping 4,303,693 vineyards and 104,330 wineries across 90 countries worldwide (with Italy, featuring nearly 31,000 entries, being the most “mentioned”, ed), providing a true international wine map just a click away. It is called WorldWineryMap.com, a project officially launched online where visitors, whether wine industry professionals or enthusiasts, can access a wealth of information about wine-producing realities.
For each individual vineyard displayed on the map, users can access highly specific geospatial data, including altitude, solar radiation, and slope, alongside key viticultural parameters such as soil composition, the Huglin Index, and average temperatures during the vine growing season. “For each parcel, we extracted the exact coordinates and calculated altitude, slope, and aspect using the Copernicus GLO-30 terrain model, then overlaid climate data”, affirmed Matija Gavrilović, founder of World Winery Map, adding that “for larger parcels, we measure up to 16 control points, which is why altitude is presented as a precise range rather than a single value. We also calculated slope, solar radiation, rainfall, wind, soil type, and geology wherever data was available”. Vineyard data, the project explains, comes from 38 independent sources, 22 of which are official government registries, accounting for 3,824,217 of the mapped parcels. Data coverage is densest in the European Union, where such registries are publicly available. In other regions, vineyard data derives from national agricultural censuses, satellite land-cover analysis, and other unofficial sources.
An integrated geolocation system allows users to instantly identify nearby wineries and receive directions to reach them, wherever they are in the world. For wine lovers who prefer exploring from home, the platform offers an exceptionally detailed virtual journey through the world wine geography. The map outlines 98,719 specific wine-region boundaries, ranging from vast macro-regions to individual named vineyard sites. It includes 2,815 official regions, sub-regions, and appellations, as well as 95,904 vineyard sites. Users can select any region to access essential information, review boundaries, check average rainfall and altitude, and analyze viticultural data such as the Winkler Index. World Winery Map stated that it is already working with official bodies in several countries to ensure the map remains as accurate as possible.
“The result is the most comprehensive digital archive of global viticulture ever created”, affirmed the founder. Wine producers around the world are invited to claim their company profile on the platform free of charge. By taking ownership of their pages, they can update tasting-room opening hours, verify visitor access policies, claim their specific vineyard parcels, and update information on the grape varieties they cultivate, actively contributing to the maintenance of the global wine map.
