"LANGHE & UNESCO": ANGELO GAJA TOLD WINENEWS, “THE PROJECT BELONGS OT EVERYONE. NOW THAT THE DREAM HAS COME TRUE, WE HAVE TO LEARN TO LOOK UP AND FAR AWAY WHILE PROTECTING THE LOCATIONS OF EXCELLENCE INSTEAD OF TURNING THEM INTO OPEN AIR BOUTIQUES”

Among the many important producers of Italy and the Piedmont, "Le Roi", Angelo Gaja, is among the most respected and exceptional entrepreneurs in the wine world. And he, like everyone, welcomes the long awaited news that the landscape of Langhe and Roero Monferrato wines has become Unesco World Heritage with enthusiasm, but also realism.
“The most awaited gift that came from a targeted policy”, Angelo Gaja told WineNews in an exclusive interview, “is the Unesco recognition of the Piedmont wine hills. It is true that only a few excellent hills have been acknowledged, as the others are called "buffer", or "zipper" hills (these terms need to be upgraded) are less important. But it must be remembered that wine in southern Piedmont is one and the areas chosen and acknowledge are like pearls set in a precious mesh. They shine only when they are together. The project belongs to everyone”.

“Now that the dream has come true”, - added Gaja – “ it needs to be followed up with tangible actions like knowing how to plan for the future, learning to reach for the sky, starting to grow culturally and accept the necessary sacrifices. These actions must lead to the recovery and rehabilitation of the landscape and its conservation over time, which is the real challenge. Instead of chasing the lure and the quick buck of increasing tourism one will have to stay away from casual tourists, and encourage those who cultivate passions tied to the culture of wine landscapes. We will have to learn how to safeguard the territories of excellence, and not let them become massive shops and stages for events and exhibitions that are not useful to the wine world”.
