60% LESS PESTICIDES USING TECHNOLOGY AND PRECISION VITICULTURE, SAYS PROFESSOR ATTILIO SCIENZA, A LEADING EXPORT IN THE WINE WORLD, AT THE ASSOENOLOGI CONGRESS

Using technology and precision viticulture, wineries can reduce the use of pesticides up to 60% and using renewable energy reduces energy bills 10-25%, maintains Professor Attilio Scienza, a leading world expert in viticulture, at the Association of Enologists, Assoenologi, conference. “With precision viticulture”, Science affirms, “you get a higher quality of vineyards and an enormous savings. One of the technological tools to use in the cellar is the Nir spectrometer that can analyze a grape in just a few seconds, providing information on seven different quality parameters. In this way,” he adds “you can harvest at different times depending on the ripeness of the grapes and reduce the use of pesticides up to 60%”. Eco-sustainability has become practically obligatory: in Italy, there is an ongoing experimentation involving 90 wineries to define an “eco” trademark, the same as in California, New Zealand and Germany.
