An alliance between the worlds of wine and finance to sustain companies, facilitate access to credit and promote growth: in Florence, the Consortium of Chianti and the Tuscan region finance company Fidi Toscana, together have created the “Chianti Project Ltd” (Progetto Chianti srl). The new company will be a meeting point between the producers of Chianti wine and the various operators in the industry to improve quality and distribution of Chianti wines. They will provide support for members through financial products or bank loans; prepare specifications for defining standards of excellence; organize promotional activities and regulate putting the product on the market through member distributors. Producers commit to meet the required specifications and the selling price of the product currently determined by the Management Committee. The producers also commit to make a quantity of wine set by the committee available for member distributors, while the distributors agree to buy the set quantity at the fixed price.
The commissioner for Agriculture Gianni Salvadori, the President of the Chianti Consortium Nunzio Capurso, and the chairman of Fidi Toscana Paul Rafanelli presented the Chianti Project today. The goal of the Region, Salvadori said, is to “further qualify one of the most excellent products of the territory, Chianti wine, and to support businesses and promote merging, boost mechanisms that make the distribution process more rational and ensure greater visibility to quality Tuscan products”.
”To overcome this moment we need to merge”, said Capurso and according to him “there is a huge delay in the arrangement of the production system. We missed the boat with the renewal of vineyards, of which 50% need to be renewed and instead chose renovating buildings. It is difficult to propose investments on the market right now”. The Chianti Wine Consortium counts 2650 companies, with approximately 600 thousand hectoliters of wine and a production area that extends to the provinces of Florence, Arezzo, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
