THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CHAIRMAN OF THE AGRICULTURE COMMISSION, PAUL DE CASTRO, CALLS ON THE ITALIAN PARLIAMENT TO WASTE LESS TIME PASSING LABEL LAWS BECAUSE MEMBER COUNTRIES HAVE NO “LEGISLATIVE POWER” ON THEM

The bill that would reform origin labels is an excellent bipartisan initiative that is ready to be passed,” says the chairman of the Agriculture Commission of the European Parliament, Paolo De Castro, “but it will have no effect legally because member states have no legislative power on labeling”.

De Castro therefore calls on the House to shift the focus to “where the rules are actually written, namely in the European Parliament, because that’s where you play the game of labeling, not in Italy”. This is why the chairman has invited the political forces and the national government to ”work where the issue will be decided, of course, and spend less time on national laws that might give some satisfaction and can mainly be used to make a nice title in newspapers, but they will not change the substance of the issue”.
