When it comes to beating a record, French wines are always ready to win. And, if the French wine is called Romanée Conti, winning is even easier. At the most recent Christie’s auction in Geneva, dedicated to “Fine Wines”, a bottle of Romanée Conti 1945 was sold for 109.000 Swiss Francs, or 87.800 euros.
The lucky bidder is an American collector, who evidently “contributed” to the new world record, together with factors like the rare nectar, fruit of a vine that was “immune” to the phylloxera that attacked the rest of the domain or like the very small production (600 bottles) due to the freeze that struck the area. Exceptional wine, at an exceptional price.
The auction house boasts many bottles of fine wines in its catalog, like Château Lafite-Rothschild Vintage 1887, but Romanée Conti reached a much higher price than the initial estimate, which was between 39.000 and 55.000 euros. A record price, worth the unique taste and rarity of one of the connoisseurs’ most loved wines.
