The battle for the protection of European names from the cannibalism of the network can now also count on the commitment of the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Dacian Ciolos, who is seeking an agreement with the American Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) to block, at least temporarily, pre-registrations for sites with the new domains ".vin" and ".wine".
The weapon in the hands of Ciolos and his colleague Neelie Kroes, Commissioner for the Digital Agenda of the European Union that represents the EU at ICANN, is the protection of intellectual property rights, which would not allow anyone who does not directly represent the wine regions of Europe to register domains like Bordeaux.vin or Rioja.wine. They are hoping to see the efforts and work of millions of people in the vineyards of the Old World safeguarded, but ICANN is leaving no stone unturned.
