Which country in the world consumes the most alcohol? According to the World Health Organization report Moldova is the country where people drink more liters of pure alcohol per capita per year, at 18.22. Italy is number 37 at 10.68, behind all the Eastern European countries, where alcohol consumption is known to be very high and they hold nine of the top ten places (Moldova, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Romania, Slovenia, Belarus) with Andorra at number 7.
The first non-European nation in the rankings is South Korea, at number thirteen and 14.8 liters per capita. But, in the top 40, there are only 6 countries outside Europe: in addition to South Korea, Nigeria, Uganda, Saint Lucia, Seychelles and Grenada. The last places, needless to say, are the Muslim countries with Pakistan, Afghanistan and Yemen in the very last positions.
The story changes if you look at the annual per capita consumption of wine. Luxembourg leads this ranking with 8.16 liters, followed by France at 8.14 and at a distance, Portugal, 6.65. Italy is fourth at 6.38. But, percentage wise the 2 least famous wine countries Guatemala and Equatorial Guinea consume more than the others. Guatemala’s average consumption of wine per capita is 3.92 out of a total of 4.03, while Equatorial Guinea’s is 4.18 out of 6.08.
