One of the most important and famous Italian wine landscapes has taken another step in its journey towards the UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition. Langhe-Roero and Monferrato are very close to entering the "World Heritage List".
The second inspection by Icomos, the technical institute that evaluates each UNESCO candidate, has led them to express a positive opinion. The ball now goes to Doha in June where the final decision of including "Wine Landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe - Roero and Monferrato " in the List of World Heritage sites will be made. So, the journey is coming to an end.
It began back in January 2011 when the Inter-Ministerial Working Group UNESCO, including representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (chaired at the time by Giancarlo Galan), the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Environment, gave the go-ahead for the application, with a view to enhancing the entire Italian heritage of rural landscapes. Also thanks to the UNESCO recognition of what the then Minister of Agriculture Galan called "a part of the thousand-year history of Italian food and wine, and one of the "diamonds" of rural Italian wealth”.
