Consorzio Collio 2024 (175x100)

ALL LIV-EX INDEXES HAVE BEEN POSITIVE IN THE FIVE YEAR TERM. "BURGUNDY" IS NUMBER ONE AT 44%, NUMBER TWO IS "REST OF THE WORLD", 40% AND NUMBER THREE "CHAMPAGNE" AT 32%. "ITALY 100" DID WELL AT 18.75%, THANKS TO THE PERFORMANCES OF TOP BRANDS

Wine & long-term investments: all Liv-ex indexes (the benchmark of the secondary market for fine wines) have been positive in the five year term (as of November 30th). In the first three spots for percentage of profitability are: Burgundy (44%), Rest of the World (40%), surprisingly, and Champagne (32%). "Italy 100" did well and is in fifth place, thanks to the performances of its top brands in the Liv-ex and "The Drinks Business" Power 100 ranking. In 2014, Italy's growth in this special classification was exponential: Sassicaia climbed to number 3 (from 39 a year ago); Ornellaia is at 13 (from 37 in 2013); Gaja entered directly at 14, and also Masseto performed well (from 33 to 25).

The real surprise is that while everyone keeps looking at Bordeaux, the new world wines are topping the lists.
Justin Gibbs, director of Liv-ex, said, “from the time the market was at its peak in May 2011, Opus One, like Penfold, Taylor's Port or Vega Sicilia have made great strides ahead in the indexes”.
The qualitative leap has also affected Italian wines, which are also the best performers. And, even though the constant top performance of Burgundy wines of the exclusive Romanée-Conti production over time is not a surprise, the market price of Champagne is and according to Gibbs it has become "extremely market stable in the long term".

That said, Bordeaux is still obviously a point of reference, although there is a down trend in profitability and quotations. The “buyers are suspicious”, added the director of Liv-ex, “until the 2014 prices have been announced”.
