Good news for wine producers. Global wine consumption grew 2.3% between 2009 and 2013, and will increase even faster by 2018: + 3.5%, with a volume of 2.5 billion 9 liter crates, reveals a study by the International Wine & Spirits Research for Vinexpo.
There are also some interesting facts. For instance, in 2018 Germans will drink more wine than Italians: 3.3 billions bottles in Germany to 3.28 billion in Italy. This is mainly due to the sharp decline in consumption on the Italian domestic market (less 5%) and growth (1%) in Germany.
Over the same period growth will be strong also in the US, which will reach 4.5 billion bottles, + 11%. So, there is one bad piece of news to two good ones for Italian wine producers.
The biggest ongoing worry is the decline in consumption on the domestic market, but they can rely on the growth of the two most important foreign markets ever: the German market for volume and the US for value.
According to the IWSR-Vinexpo report, the highest per capita consumption will be either Italy or France, both around 45 litres per capita per year.
