In a world that tends to divide more than unite, like the wine world, strangely enough the exact opposite is happening in France. The Union des maisons de vins du Beaujolais et du Mâconnais, which since November, when Philippe Tranchand resigned, no longer has a president, is seriously considering merging with the Union des maisons de vins de Bourgogne.
After the 2015 harvest that in Beaujolais provoked tensions between production and traders, no one wanted to take the situation in hand, being aware that it was economically difficult to manage.
“We have given ourselves time until spring to find someone”, explained the director of the Union des maisons de vins du Beaujolais, Pierre Gernelle, to the French portal "Vitisphere" (www.vitisphere.com).
Then, from June on, the road is marked out - the union of Beaujolais producers will merge with the union of Burgundy producers, because "it is useless to increase structures, things could quickly go in this direction. Obviously, there would be trade union representatives for each of the two territories after the merger”, concluded Gernelle, “in that sense, nothing would change”. Beaujolais has been struggling for a long time, so it is a logical step to merge with the "great Burgundy", as many producers have properties in both denominations.
