MADE IN ITALY BUBBLES FROM FRANCIACORTA TO TRENTODOC, DID VERY WELL AT THE "CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING WINE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS". ITALY BROUGHT HOME 30 GOLD AND 36 SILVER MEDALS, A FIFTH AND A QUARTER OF THE TOTAL AWARDS, BEHIND ONLY FRANCE

“Italy has definitely come of age as a country producer of sparkling wines, especially classic brut”, is the opinion, anchored on a solid and growing history of excellence, of Tom Stevenson, founder and president of the prestigious jury of the "Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships" (www.champagnesparklingwwc.co.uk). The 2016 edition has just ended with the publication of the most awarded countries and wineries. Italy’s results were excellent, taking home 30 Gold and 36 Silver Medals out of 149 and 143 total, consolidating its position globally, behind only France.
Among the Gold Medals awarded to Italy are: Guido Berlucchi and Ferrari (five golds each), followed by Nino Franco, Rotari and Fratelli Berlucchi (three) and Uberti, two. One each, instead to Antica Fratta, Bellaveder, Biondelli, Bisol, Cantina d'Isera, Franche-Comté, Lantieri, Maso Martis and Tenuta degli Ultimi. Even though France has predictably dominated the rankings, with 70 gold medals (46% of the total), Italy, headed by the bubbles of Trentodoc and Franciacorta, has left its mark. According to Stevenson, “Italy is not only Franciacorta and Trentodoc, but those are the two regions that stand out the most. Franciacorta, because of its climate that is slightly warmer than Champagne, which gives it a natural advantage in the non-dosage style and Trentodoc because of its remarkable temperature range, which makes it even more difficult to produce than Champagne, but in return generates seismic blanc de blancs”.
