Everyone knows the British are wild about bubbles. First it was Champagne, and then Prosecco came along to make the pleasure of drinking bubbles a bit more democratic. Why are they such a hit? "Wine Intelligence" (www.wineintelligence.com) asked Her Majesty’s subjects in a survey about the three main sparkling wines: Champagne, Prosecco and Cava.
The first two are overwhelmingly the first choices while Cava is almost always relegated to third choice.
Champagne wins for quality taking 64% of preferences, Prosecco at 22% and Cava at 14%, and also elegance, with 60% of votes (Prosecco 21% and Cava 12%). And for celebrations, again the French bubbles surpass all with 59% of preferences, but Prosecco is close by, preferred by 47% of British wine lovers.
As far as tasted is concerned, and therefore the mere pleasure of the palate, Champagne and Prosecco are equal at 41%, while Italian sparkling is the most trendy, according to 33% of British consumers (Champagne at 32%). Prosecco is above all perfect for socializing and reigns at 46% of preferences, Cava (33%) ahead of Champagne (29%), as well as for aperitifs, at 39% of votes (Champagne 27%, Cava 23%).
Prosecco is also considered the most refreshing by 44% of the sampled wine lovers, but also the one that best pairs with food (32%), as well as winning the quality ratio challenge (46%) against Cava (38%).
