PERFECTION MIGHT NOT BE OF THIS WORLD, BUT ITALIAN WINES COME VERY CLOSE ACCORDING TO THE BEST WINES RANKING BY “WINE LISTER”. GIACOMO CONTERNO’S BAROLO MONFORTINO RISERVA AND BAROLO CASCINA FRANCIA, ARE NUMBER ONE AND TWO, FOLLOWED BY MASSETO

Perfection might not be of this world, but wines come pretty close and all they have to do, so to speak, is excel in the nine categories that make up the final score of “Wine Lister”- the index that ranks the best in the world, analyzed for “Quality”, “Brand” and “Economics” (www.wine-lister.com). These factors are changeable and can be improved according to price dynamics and availability of a bottle that can change from one month to another. The quality aspect is different because the scores on a vintage remain unchanged, so in the ranking of the best Italian wines at the end of 2017 there are new entries and step ups; however, Barolo dominates over Super Tuscans and Brunello.
The top position with 979 points goes to Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Monfortino Riserva, and the Langa brand also takes the second position, Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Cascina Francia (962 points), ahead of Masseto, one of the Italian stars at international auctions, at 956 points. Spot number 4 goes to Soldera Case Basse Sangiovese (954 points), and only a single point difference for Montervertine Le Pergole Torte (953 points), while number 6 goes to Langa again, Bartolo Mascarello’s Barolo, as well as Sassicaia, both at 951 points. In position number 8, at 950 points, Azienda Agricola Falletto (Bruno Giacosa) Barolo Rocche Falletto Reserve, while Solaia took position 9 and 948 points, and Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sperss closed the top 10 at 944 points.
It is worth taking a look at the top 20 positions, too, because at number 11 it is again Gaja’s Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì San Lorenzo (940 points), followed by Ornellaia at number 12 (936 points), Tignanello at number 13 and 934 points, tied with Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste. Spot number 15 is for Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì Tildìn, at 923 points, as well as Giuseppe Mascarello and Son Barolo Monprivato and Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis. At spot 18 Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Brunello di Montalcino Reserve, 922 points, followed by Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella (918 points), and Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne (910 points) closed the top 20.
