Thieves have targeted Count Francesco Marone Cinzano, head of the Col d’Orcia brand. Whether it is the price of celebrity or a cowardly crime, it does not matter, the substance is that lately in the wineries in Montalcino peaceful sleep does not come easily. After the robbery in Cupano, which on December 6th awakened to find 900 bottles of Brunello and Brunello Riserva gone, it is now the turn of Col d'Orcia, historical brand of the territory, owned by Count Francesco Marone Cinzano, where they are still counting the damage, which should be in the order of tens of thousands of euros. “During the night between Saturday and Sunday (January 20th and 21st, ed.), Count Francesco Marone Cinzano told WineNews, “someone broke in to our company, went into the offices, stole the wine shop keys and took over a thousand bottles, all Brunello and Brunello Riserva Poggio al Vento, in the 0.75 liter format, including the old vintages, in a very precise manner. They stole unique years, like 1964, the Brunello for Barack Obama's Grand Tasting”, Cinzano recalled, “but also 1967, not to mention the 1997 Poggio al Vento, the best wine of the year for Gambero Rosso, or Poggio al Vento 1999, awarded by Espresso. And, bottles of Poggio al Vento 1990, 1988, 1985, Brunello 2013, the first organic one, which came out just recently. They loaded everything on one of our trucks and left. The Carabinieri of Montalcino”, concluded Count Marone Cinzano, “were very quick and thorough, we have great confidence in their work”.
