Wine, oil and grains will return to Selinunte, thanks to the project of the Archaeological Park in collaboration with the Italian farmers association, Coldiretti Sicily. The bond with the agricultural world and the largest Archaeological Park in Europe, in Selinunte, is therefore continuing. The project the Sicilian Settesoli winery initiated, “Settesoli Sostiene Selinunte”, which, through the sale of dedicated bottles, has already collected 120.000 euros in support of the Park, and has been used for part of the lighting and to improve accessibility. Now, a project has been created to return the agricultural vocation of the Park of Selinunte, reintroducing the productions of grains, wine and oil which was its wealth 3.000 years ago, and work to develop the Sicilian tourism heritage that links culture and history to the various production sectors. These are the goals of the Protocol of Understanding between Coldiretti Sicilia and the Archaeological Park of Selinunte and Cave di Cusa, signed recently by the regional president, Francesco Ferreri and the Park manager, Enrico Caruso.
“The more than 300 hectare Archaeological Park is the largest in Europe, and used to be rich in crops of grains, olive groves, vineyards and sheep and goat farms”, pointed out Coldiretti. The goal of our project is to restore the agricultural heritage of the area, designating the productions that represent the identification of the area, offering a territorial brand of great value along with increasing its value”. “It is an important bet”, added Ferreri, who is also the wine maker of the famous Valle dell’Acate winery, “and we will provide technical advice to identify suitable areas for different crops as well as initiate many other activities that will grow the area”. The director of the Park, Caruso is quite satisfied and said, “with an eye on growth, we are all involved in improving what Sicily has”. This is testimony that Italy is more and more trying to combine its historical and agricultural heritage, as for instance, it has done for years in Pompeii with the wine of “Villa dei Misteri”, produced by the famous Archaeological Park of Campania and the Mastroberardino winery.
