“Ancient Grapes, Modern Wines Cultural Treasures”: Wine Spectator’s cover dedicated to Italy

Wine Spectator, the most widespread wine magazine in the world, for very many years and in conjunction with Vinitaly, has dedicated its “cover story” to Italy. In 2018, the cover story highlighted Priscilla and Niccolò Incisa della Rocchetta, at the helm of the famous Tenuta San Guido, cradle of Sassicaia (and the territories of Bolgheri, Barolo and Marche), while in previous years the covers were dedicated to the Antinori family and their brand Amarone della Valpolicella Allegrini, the founder of Eataly and wine producer Oscar Farinetti and the rock star and winemaker Sting. The 2019 edition will feature Barbera, Pinot Bianco, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Vermentino, Aglianico and Nero d’Avola. The opening title on the cover is “Ancient Grapes, Modern Wines, Cultural Treasures”, and the issue is dedicated to the discovery of a lesser-known Italy through six grape vines of secular history, the characteristic expressions of different territories, which also narrate the desire of wine lovers the world over to experiment in the glass. However, there is also an in-depth study of Barolo and a focus on Verona, where for years, in partnership with Vinitaly, Wine Spectator has organized Opera Wine, the only tasting authorized by the magazine outside the USA, dedicated to Italian wines.
