One of the most popular holiday choices of tourists from all over the world is the food and wine tour. Wine tourism is a true revelation and it is an activity that attracts an increasing number of visitors to wine-producing areas. Because of this, there are now many areas dedicated to viticulture that have begun to adapt to the flow of tourists, and have made available facilities offering hospitality as well as combining tastings to discover the wines and flavors of the territory.
Consequently, the popular online review site, TripAdvisor, has compiled, based on user feedback, its top ten “Wine Experiences” in the world, ranking.
In the 2019 edition of TripAdvisor's Travelers’ Choice Award, first place, somewhat surprisingly, went to the wine region of Etyek, a rural district near Budapest in Hungary. The winner of the 2019 edition has included activities such as a tour of the wineries and then dinner in a restaurant in the city. The Tuscan countryside has taken second place due to the appeal of its rolling hills and countless wineries that have conquered the hearts of TripAdvisor users with the activity “Wine tasting for small groups in the Tuscan countryside”. The Portuguese area of the Douro valley, in the Porto area, is in third position, and a Portuguese lunch, a wine tasting and a river cruise are included.
South Africa has taken fourth place of the most popular wine experiences among TripAdvisor users, for its large vine planted area around Cape Town, and included in the package is a generic wine tour.
Fifth place went to the Australian wine area Swan Valley, near Perth, with its many wine companies and shops where wines can be bought. Santa Barbara in California, instead, took sixth place, among its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Syrahs and Sauvignon Blancs, including also a sack lunch directly in the vineyard. California also conquered the seventh position for its San Francisco area including tasting tours around the wine companies. Australia also has two positions in the ranking as it took eighth place as well, including visits to the Yarra Valley, a wine area near Melbourne.
Ninth place went to Portugal, which therefore also can boast two spots in the ranking, and includes food and wine tours in Lisbon in search of superfine flavors and exciting pairings of Portuguese cuisine and wine. Finally, tenth place went to New Zealand in the Queenstown area, including a wine and cheese tasting.
