Forbes, Asti the perfect destination: a must-see are the Underground Cathedrals of Canelli

The magazine Usa crowns the jewel of Monferrato, and the majestic cellars dug into the tuff over 200 years ago, custodians of the famous bubbles

“Asti, the city of bubbles in Italy, has everything you could wish for from an Italian city”: these are the words with which the prestigious American magazine Forbes crowned Asti, the Piedmontese capital set in the heart of Monferrato, whose hills are not by chance UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, the ideal destination to spend a fantastic holiday at the end of summer. The whole Asti area is in fact the guardian of a perfect union between wine culture, history and art, which are mixed and merged with unique results, starting with the Underground Cathedrals of Canelli, a gem village in Italy considered the home of sparkling wine: here in the mid-nineteenth century was made the first production of sweet bubbles, now among the most famous in the world. It is in this small village, which Forbes marks as one of the obligatory stops, that the majestic Cathedrals are “hidden”: underground there are the suggestive cellars dug into the tuff of the surrounding hills about 200 years ago and which extend for 20 kilometers under the city center. These underground passages, considered true masterpieces of engineering and oenological architecture, still protect the sparkling wine that is aged here in the best light and temperature conditions.
