AN ADDITIONAL 222 HECTARES OF GLERA GRAPES ARE ARRIVING IN FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA TO PROSECCO DOC. THE CONSORTIUM'S PROPOSAL TO RAISE THE LIMIT ON THE PLANTING AREA WAS ACCEPTED, SO IT WILL INCREASE 1.200 HECTARES TO REACH 24.450 BY 2020

Following the proposal submitted by the Agricultural Resources Coordinator of the Region of Friuli Cristiani Shaurli, the Regional Council has recently approved the increase of the growing area set by the Consortium of Prosecco Doc (www.discoverproseccowine.it). Currently, the area established between Friuli and Veneto is 23.250 hectares, but according to the agreement between the two regions that the Consortium fervently advocated, the total cultivation area will increase to 24.450 hectares by 2020.
Of the additional 1.200 hectares, 222 will be in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The increase was requested consequent to the 6% increase in annual sales of sparkling wines in the world, in order to avoid supply disparities due to a possible "run" to plant new areas. The criteria and how the 222 hectares will be allocated to the producing companies have not yet been announced.
