It’s already time for end-of-year rankings for the major international wine magazines, and to open the dances, as always, is “Wine Enthusiast”, with its “Top 100 Best Buys of 2019”, dedicated to the best wines for value for money tasted by the staff of the American magazine (whose Italian editor is Kerin O’Keefe).
From which it emerges clearly the trend that sees the packaging alternative to the classic glass bottle become more and more popular in American consumption, starting with wine in cans, so much so that if at No.1 in the ranking there is the Founders’ Estate Pinot Noir 2017 of Beringer, at No. 2 there is Dark Horse NV Brut Bubbles, Californian sparkling wine distributed in cans, while in the top 10, at No. 7, there is also Black Box’s Chardonnay 2017, one of the most successful brands of bag-in-box wine.
Regarding Italy, on the other hand, there are 10 labels from Italy in the ranking: Rosso Silenzio Isola dei Nuraghi 2017 by Pala at No. 17, Ondarosa Organic Rosato 2018 by Masseria Amastuola at No. 27, Il Bianco La Segreta (Doc Sicilia) by Planeta at No. 58, Primitivo Orion 2017 by Masseria Li Veli at No. 8. 75, Masciarelli’s Trebbiano d’Abruzzo 2018 at No. 77, Carpi’s Lambrusco di Modena Brut Piazza Grande at No. 81, Tenute Folonari’s Chianti 2017 at No. 84, Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi’s Rèmole 2017 at No. 90, Mezzacorona’s Pinot Grigio 2018 at No. 93 and Fantini's Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2018 at No. 96.
It ranks with a “made in USA” traction, with 29 American labels, ahead of France with 12 and Italy, as mentioned, with 10, in a list that, among others, also includes Georgia and Israel with 2 wines each, and Bulgaria, Greece and India, with one.
