MONITORING MARKETS

China has imported 2.4 billion euros of wine over the past 10 years. Average prices soar

Vinitaly, together with ICE and Italian Consulate, star at the “International Wine and Spirit Show” in Chengdu

Even though 2018 had its ups and downs for Italian wine exports to China, the trend of wine shipments from all over the world in the last ten years still marked a steady growth, which translates into a total of 2.4 billion euros, catching up on the historic world markets such as Germany, which totaled 2.6 billion euros in the same period. These, then, are the numbers to start with and to continue growing and focusing on the top positions – it’s an onerous, but not impossible task, provided that the Chinese market is managed in a common and shared effort. An example of this is “Vinitaly China Chengdu”, the fair-inside-the-fair, organized by Veronafiere, together with the Italian Consulate in Chongqing and the Beijing ICE Agency, led by Amedeo Scarpa, which is being held at the "International Wine and Spirit Show" in Chengdu, the historic appointment for the wine sector, until March 23rd. The Chinese market needs to be closely monitored, especially because of its very high added value, since on the Beijing market Italian wine manages to achieve an average price of 4 euros per liter, compared to the just 1.8 euros per liter it gets in Germany.
“The Asian market, particularly the Chinese one, is becoming more and more strategic as far as the future for our wine products is concerned”, commented Giovanni Mantovani, General Manager of Veronafiere, “Vinitaly has been on this market for 20 years and we are now also laying the foundations to establish a stable platform of fair trade promotion for Italian wine, including specific facilities and specialized events”. Davide Castellani, the Italian vice-consul in Chongqing, said, “this area of China is one of the most interesting and dynamic in the entire country, as it represents the new frontier of economic development, for wine as well. The consulate is, therefore, at the forefront of institutional collaboration with Vinitaly, which is one of the most effective tools for promoting the Made in Italy system”.
