IS "BYOB", OR THE TREND OF BRINGING WINE FROM HOME TO THE RESTAURANT, BECOMING A FASHION, OR ARE THERE STILL ONLY A FEW PEOPLE WHO BRING THEIR OWN BOTTLE TO THE RESTAURANT? "WINE SPECTATOR" READERS SAY IT IS PRACTICAL AND YOU ALSO SAVE MONEY

Wine by the glass is a well-established trend all over the world, which has helped those countries where consumption is declining to pick up, and also those where wine in restaurants is expanding to grow more quickly (thanks to the development of technologies that guarantee the quality of the product served). However, the trend that has been expanding the most in recent years is the so-called "BYOB" or "Bring your own bottle", i.e. bringing a bottle of wine from home to drink at the restaurant. Restaurants are more and more willing to offer this possibility also in Italy as it combines the desire to save money but also to experience different wines, and restaurants can reduce wine lists and cost of "wine service".
At least in the United States, "BYOB" is now quite popular among fans. According to an online survey by the famous magazine "Wine Spectator" (www.winespectator.com), 36% of its readers (out of 343 responders) drink the wine they brought from home more than half of the time. 23%, however, take a bottle from home once every four times, while 23% do so rarely, and 17% said they never do so. The magazine then asked its readers, "What is the right occasion to buy fine wines". 45% responded they drink high-end wines at the weekend at home, 22% buys them to take to parties, while 10% buy them to enjoy them alone, or as an aperitif. 4% buy them as gifts for friends or relatives, but only 2% take them to dine at the restaurant. There is, also 10% who responded, "I only buy value wines".
