A “revolutionary” study promoted by the University of Pisa has as its main goal that of scientifically defining the quantity of wine that each person can drink with resulting positive health effects. According to firsthand information given to WineNews, the website reports that this study is an absolute novelty worldwide.
The question first appears to be an easily resolved one, given that there is quite a large collection of scientific literature on the beneficial effects of wine on human health. But, in reality, there has never been any real scientific study on this topic.
As Professor Amedeo Alpi points out: “We know more or less the effect of one glass of wine during a meal is positive, but we don’t know anything about two glasses, and we think that three glasses are probably too may. We want to study the effects of wine consumed at meals, in order to find, if possible, a quantitative reference that can then be scientifically measured”.
After the preliminary cataloguing of the scientific texts and publications on wine-health relations, the epidemiological study will begin, with the precious contributions of Professor Aldo Pinchera, on a sample of at least 1,000 people, taking into account, naturally, the differences in sex, eating habits, and lifestyles. The sample group will all drink wine at mealtime and be monitored and controlled just as with pharmaceutical drug experiments.
“This part of the research is the most important and requires fairly long technical times”, noted Professor Alpi.
Too often wine is confused with hard liquor and the study at the University of Pisa would like to clear up this inaccuracy. Professor Alpi concludes, “Alcohol is bad for you but wine is something else. Our goal is that of finally giving scientific information on the positive health effects of wine through methods that are precise, quantifiable and scientifically relevant”.
