ROOM FOR THE YOUNG: THE CITTA’ DEL VINO (WINE CITIES) REQUEST THE EARLY RETIREMENT OF THE “OLDER GENERATIONS” IN THE WINE WORLD

Early retirement for both the owners of wineries as well as for the vineyards that have been planted as “effective levers for the reduction that has been programmed for made in Italy wine, and for the renewal of the sector that is socially sustainable and with prospectives for the entrepreneurs of the younger generations”: these were the wishes of the president of Città del Vino, Floriano Zambon, and the mayor of Montefalco, Valentino Valentini, during at a recent informal audition at the Agricultural Commission of the Senate.
Mayor Valentini noted: “Within the entire national territory, there are 300,000 hectares run by winemakers over 65 years old. Facilitating the generational changeover means giving a future to the sector and supporting the market of young consumers who tend towards less consumption, but of higher quality. A production style chosen, more often than not, by younger winemakers, not very inclined to use wood chips because they are attentive to the image of the winery and to questions of health security by clients”.
Floriano Zambon pointed out that for the proposals for early retirement and elimination of older vineyards the EU Commission, “must verify where and how. A good 80% of Italian vineyards are, in fact, over 25 - 30 years old and are destined to be renovated soon. It is possible to create initiatives for the reduction of national production, but it is necessary to program renewals”.
