ADOPT A SHEEP: THE ORIGINAL IDEA OF A SARDINIAN TO CONTINUE RAISING HIS FLOCK DURING TOUGH TIMES

A pastor’s life has become continuously more difficult in recent years. The depreciation of milk prices and ruthless foreign competition have caused Italian pastor’s earnings to drop notably, with their work now just barely covering costs. But a Sardinian pastor, who has been tending his flock of 100 sheep for over 30 years, has come up with a brilliant solution. Together with his wife and four children, he has created the project “Becoming a long distance pastor” (www.sardiniafarm.com), which offers people the chance to “adopt a sheep” and reap its benefits.
The pastor offers a sheep to be adopted by an individual who can then give it a name. The long distance pastor will also be sent periodic updates on the animal’s health and production rates and, eventually, the resulting products like pecorino cheese. It is also possible, at any time throughout the year, to stop by the farm itself and get to know the sheep personally, as well as a first hand account of the results of one’s contribution. It is also possible to become a long distance “farmer”, with the possibility of receiving the goods produced on the Sardinian farm (myrtle, honey, cheese, strawberries). Truly an original way to revalorize the uncontaminated territory of central Sardinia.
