A video of seven hooded men reading a proclamation to newly instated president Sarkozy: raise the price of wine or blood will run. This anomalous threat occurred recently in France, in the region of Languedoc, and those responsible for it respond to the name of CRAV, or, The Union for Viticultural Action. The message was launched on the 100 year anniversary of the last revolt by viticulturalists of the region, which ended with 6 protesters murdered by the French military.
What is the current protest about? The prices of wine are so low that many farmers are unable to survive, with earnings decreasing by as much as 50%. The recent video was preceded by various other demonstrative acts by CRAV (explosives at supermarkets that sell foreign wines, tanker trucks attacked) to ensure that the government understand they are truly ready to turn to violence if the situation does not improve. The Languedoc produces more wine than it can sell and for this reason prices have collapsed. CRAV has requested a meeting with the government in order to discuss possible solutions.
