The project to elect the “Mediterranean Diet” as an immaterial world heritage by UNESCO is now underway. At the end of April, a “Declaration of cooperation” was signed at Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture between Italy, Spain, Greece, and Morocco, specifically emphasizing “the reasons for a common effort to preserve and confer continuity to a unique and extraordinary patrimony”.
“With this document” – explained the Ministry of Agriculture – “the transnational characteristics of the project are recognized and the existence of a nucleus consisting of four countries. It, as well, stresses that this is an open candidacy, with an invitation for all countries in the Mediterranean basin to participate in the project”.
The representatives of the four countries also agreed on the necessity to stimulate work in their respective countries to guarantee adequate preparation for the candidacy project; for adequate cooperation and sharing of experiences; and to invite and involve as many other countries around the Mediterranean as possible.
