17 enologists and wine entrepreneurs have been accused of cutting and mixing with lower quality wines what should have been high quality wines with the IGT Toscana and DOCG Chianti seals. The public prosecutor’s office of Siena began the investigation after the request by Finance police to make pre-emptive seizures of several different wines.
During the activities of last year’s fraudulent Brunello investigation, police came across evidence that other types of denomination wine producers of Chianti DOCG and IGT Toscano may be mixing their wines as well. And estimates are that 10 million liters of fraudulent wine may have been released on the market.
