Do you remember the “wine kits” that have worried the wine world for years with food and commercial scams? Up until a few months ago they were almost exclusively on the web, while now the shop "Making Your Wine", the first of its kind in Europe, and without contravening to UE laws (http://makingyourwine.com/our-concept) has been opened in Ireland. The idea came from a Belgian gentleman, Luc Heymans, who when he moved to Great Britain was, as he said, “shocked by the price of the wine. When I lived in Belgium”, he told the "The Drinks Business" (www.thedrinksbusiness.com), “it was normal for me to drink a glass of wine at dinner, but here it is really overpriced.
So, I thought I would start making my own wine and since the results were very good, I opened a shop, like the thousands of make your own wine shops in Canada where anyone who wants to can create their own wine”.
Since it opened less than a year ago, the shop has been literally swamped with requests, especially “of couples looking for customized wine for their wedding. For instance, one couple told me that the best offer they had found was 2.300 euros for 150 bottles, while I was able to give them the much lower price of 670 Euros”. Of course, we are talking about wine kits, so whoever wants to can carry out the entire production process, if you can call it that, in their own homes.
“Depending on the quality of the wine one chooses”, explained Heymans, “it can take from 4 to 8 weeks to produce. After this period, the customer returns to the shop to bottle, cork and label his wines. Then one takes the wine home and lets it rest for a few more months, and if the product does not meet the customers’ expectations we give them their money back, although so far this has never happened”.
So, if the wine world was waiting for a tough opposition on this phenomenon from the EU Parliament, it will be disappointed, because beyond protecting appellations of origin, wine kits continue to exist, and seem destined for big success, at least on a commercial level, even in the Old World.
