One of the legends of Italian music in the world has, for several years, dedicated much time “with passion and culture” to the production of wine. She returns to her homeland for her flagship wines. Now in Siena, at the Enoteca Italiana (info: www.enoteca-italiana.it), Gianna Nannini talks about the three wines produced at the historic estate La Certosa, in the hills near Siena, during the wine tasting event ”The wines of Certosa. From the vine to the glass. Presentation of the 2006 vintage”.
She travels the world over, but has a genuine passion for her land. Gianna Nannini has chosen to bottle the perfumes and the colors, searching their roots through the art of wine making. Wine has always been considered the product symbolizing the culture, history and traditions of a territory, like the Tuscan countryside, which has always been dedicated to wine making.
The three wines, which were produced thanks to the affectionate care of the wine expert Renzo Cotarella (I did it as General Manager of the Antinori winery…” and he adds, joking a bit, that “we couldn’t not give proper support to Gianna because of her all-time love for Tignanello “ed). The wines are called “Chiostro di Venere” (Cloister of Venus) “Rosso di Clausura”, (Cloister Red) and also “Baccano” (Bacchus).
All three wines are IGT (geographical indication) Tuscany, based on the Sangiovese grape. They come from the “La Certosa” estate vineyards, which Gianna bought two years ago (75 hectares, of which only 8 are cultivated with vines). It is 7 km from Siena and is an ancient monastery in the territory of Sienese Chianti Hills, where wine has been produced since the sixteenth century.
“They are very special wines,” explains Renzo Cotarella, “that are very well developed with a strong identity and personality from the vivacious Baccano to the mature Clausura Rosso and come from that “piece” of land. The names given to the wines are also a reference of style. Which is the most intriguing one? “Most certainly Baccano,” continued Cotarella, “ it is the most “spirited” because it is easy to drink, and is the closest to Gianna’s personality, if it is true that a wine reflects who makes it”.
The ”La Certosa” wines have been produced following avant-garde methods with respect to the characteristics of the grapes, a scrupulous care of the vineyards and choosing not to produce in adverse weather years. They are aged at least six months in bottles before being put on the market.
“Baccano” has a prevalence of Sangiovese and a fine cut of Syrah; “Chiostro di Venere” is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, ending with Sangiovese and “Clausura Rosso”, which has been produced at “La Certosa” since the end of the sixteenth century, focuses on the characteristics of Sangiovese, with the addition of a small percentage of Merlot. An interesting project, thanks to its young but enthusiastic and competent team, is taking shape at the “La Certosa” estate also on the wine “Sulcus”, which is a Vin Santo from Chianti, one of the Tuscan culture wines, and present in the memories of a child who today is the rock star Gianna Nannini. Her passion for wine, art and culture in her land has prompted Gianna Nannini to dedicate words of great poetry to it. She tells the story of her relationship with this product, as old as the landscapes of the Siena countryside, through fields of vines and olive trees:
The perfume of wine / is the smell of the land where I was born / and I am reborn every time I go back / The taste of wine / accompanies me and doesn’t leave me / like the breath of life / it makes my soul sing / makes me feel close to people / makes me love harder./ Wine is at the root of my body/moving / it is the fountain of the notes / that cling to melodies / it is the thrill that / makes you feel where you’re from / in the middle of the fields in each country. / Wine is alive/”.
For Gianna, citizen of the world but Doc Sienese, wine, while retaining its materiality, has its own body texture and lends itself more than other products to represent modernity while at the same time symbolizing the culture of the land. Wine means conviviality, being together, reflecting and meditating, happiness as well as the research and expression of creativity.
“These are the real reasons why” Gianna Nannini explained to WineNews, “ I wanted to make wine. I did it to remember the smells of my land, the real smells. I felt the need to return to the land and even to slow the pace of my life. I do not make wine for commercial reasons, the artist in this case is not me, but the wines themselves. If the wines are very much like me that is because they have a “rock” soul, just like mine.” “I think,” Nannini concluded, “that natural agriculture is indispensable, because the world and its resources are over exploited.

Time running without the world A world that runs constantly and leaves no time to think. A time that sweeps everything up to the impossibility of supporting it.
The time that I have , I dedicate to the land, my land, where I was born.
There is in me, and I think it should be in all of us in our daily lives,
feeling this need to reconnect with the land, with nature.
I think about the time when I was a little girl who grew up with the farmers
farmers who worked the land, respecting it and respecting its rhythms.
This mother earth belongs to everyone.
I love the earth to save it from abandonment.
I felt the desire and the will to become myself the mother of my land
to relate to nature and because the land is in danger
unbridled exploitation of the land
threatens crushing the world, only to become the law of profit.
