The best wines from autochthonous vines of Italy? Unveiled in Bolzano and Autochtona

From Trentino, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Marche and Sicily the best autochthonous expressions in the glass

If, according to many, among the voices of Italian and world critics, but also of wine lovers, the great treasures of Italy’s wine are its autochthonous vines, the champions, in this sense, come from Trentino, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Marche and Sicily. At least, looking at the Autochtona Awards, at “Autoctoni che passione!”, the national forum of autochthonous wines, in the last few days, in Bolzano.
And so, in the category of the Best White Wine, an autochthonous wine deeply linked to Trentino, Nosiola, emerges with the 2018 vintage of the Maso Poli winery. For the Best Red Wine we move to Piedmont with the noble Nebbiolo in the interpretation of the winery Adriano Marco e Vittorio and their Barbaresco Docg Basarin 2016. Also this year, the recognition of the Best Bubbles not only remains in Emilia, but still within the walls of Cantina della Volta with Lambrusco di Sorbara La Prima Volta Dosaggio Zero Metodo Classico 2015. Descending, then, in Sicily, on the slopes of Etna there is the Best Rosé which is the Nerello Mascalese of Serafica Terra di Olio e Vino, the Grotta dei Lamponi 2018. The Best Sweet Wine is instead a wine from Marche and in particular the Bianchello Monsavium 2011 of the Azienda Agricola Fiorini. Returning, then, to Piedmont, and always with Nebbiolo, but this time changing the name, for the Special Prize Terroir assigned to the Sizzano 2016 by Villa Guelpa.
Finally, the second Special Prize, to celebrate 10 years of "Autochtona" (which bears the name of the magazine Spirito diVino) was awarded to TerraQuilia with the Spumante Sanrosé extra brut 2016, an Ancestral Method from Sangiovese grapes grown on the hills of Guiglia in Modena.

“The autochthonous vines still have a lot to reveal and communicate - underlined the famous critic and sommelier Luca Gardini, this year president of the jury - especially in a country like Italy, home of an incredible wealth from this point of view. It is right, therefore, to enhance the value of our vines through events such as these, which deserve to grow even more to ensure that no one forgets varieties and wines that represent an indispensable heritage”.
In Bolzano, however, the best producers of Lagrein, the main black grape variety of South Tyrolean viticulture, were also crowned. In the category “Best Lagrein Kretzer” (i.e. rose), the winners were Südtirol Lagrein Kretzer 2018 from Schmid Oberrautner; in the category “Best Lagrein Classico”, Südtirol Lagrein Rubeno 2018 from Kellerei Andrian; in the category "Best Lagrein Riserva", Südtirol Lagrein Riserva Taber 2017 from Kellerei Bozen. This is how the comparative tasting, organized in collaboration with the Consorzio Vini Alto Adige, decided.
“Also this year we are satisfied with Tasting Lagrein, a comparative tasting that has the merit of giving the right stage and the well -deserved visibility to one of the great red wines of South Tyrol, land of now famous white wines - comments Eduard Bernhart, director of the Consorzio Vini Alto Adige - both the winners and the finalists of this year well capture a movement always in great turmoil in our region and the result of a team game fundamental to enhance our small great mountain viticulture”.
