After eight years of “abstinence”, the White House is now occupied by a man who is not afraid of being seen with a drink in his hand. According to the news agency ANSA and the U.S. journal ‘Politico’, though Obama may be struggling for years with his tobacco addiction, he is much more serene when it comes to alcohol.
After becoming president, Obama has continued his romantic evenings with Michelle in restaurants in Washington, New York, and Paris. And on these occasions he has always ordered alcoholic drinks. At a restaurant in the West Village in New York he ordered a bottle of red wine (while Michelle sipped two aperitifs), and during an evening in Washington, at the famous Citronelle restaurant, the couple ordered Martini’s. When Obama won the elections he celebrated with a bottle of South African sparkling wine. And when he goes to his favorite restaurant in Chicago, Topolobampo, Margaritas are always ordered.
An even more uninhibited relationship with alcohol emerged in February 2009 when Obama was photographed drinking a cup of beer while watching his favorite basketball team, the Chicago Bulls play against the Wizards. According to ‘Politico’, some Americans protested such a public display of alcohol consumption. One reader commented, “The presidency is a job that lasts 24 hours a day. Obama shouldn’t drink on the job”.
Obama, who has admitted experimenting with drugs and alcohol in his youth, now serves wine and beer to congress members and their families during festivities at the White House. And though he seems to enjoy drinking in general, and with no particular preferences, he has actually never been photographed drinking within the confines of the White House.
