We have often heard and repeated the saying Prosecco for all occasions, but Champagne for the most important moments, in view of the rapidly growing success of the most famous Italian sparkling wine, sometimes even at the expense of French bubbles. Now, though, this saying could be turned around since the UK market - trendsetter par excellence - and one of the markets that historically has made the success of Champagne, now prefers Prosecco for wedding banquets, revealed a study by the UK wine Merchant Laithwaites (online retailer that has been working with 19 physical stores in the UK and delivering wines from around the world to the more than 700.000 members of its club for 55 years, www.laithwaites.co.uk).
"International Wine Challenge" 2015 has just acknowledged Laithwaites number one, reported www.express.co.uk, according to which 2 out of 3 British couples choose Prosecco to toast the most important day of their lives, while Champagne is poured into only 1 out of 12 glasses.
This overtake is not that recent, as it started in 2013 and the motivations, reveals the study, are best value for money and Prosecco is easier to drink than Champagne.
Laithwaites explained that about 150 bottles of wine, on average, are consumed at a wedding, mostly red (60) and then, at a tie, white and sparkling wines.
