“A EUROPEAN LAW ON LABELS WILL GUARANTEE BETTER CONSUMER INFORMATION AND ALLOW PRODUCERS TO TALK UP THEIR PRODUCTS”, THE EU AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER DACIAN CIOLOS TOLD WINENEWS AT THE SALONE DEL GUSTO

“A European law on labeling will provide better information for consumers and producers can make the most of their products when consumers are looking for specific characteristics”, the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Dacian Ciolos told WineNews, at the taste fair Salone del Gusto, in Turin, which are the benefits the European law on labeling, being discussed in Brussels, would bring. “This law can be considered the first defense against “food piracy”, because we are moving towards better information for consumers, who can choose whether to buy a standardized product at an affordable price or a product that comes from a specific area, produced according to specific rules”, said Ciolos.

The European Commissioner for Agriculture, after having sung the praises of traditional food, roots and identity, pointed the way for a sustainable breakthrough with the new CAP that will rest on three pillars: environmental sustainability, social sustainability and economic sustainability. All European countries will have to support these pillars until the new CAP definitely becomes an instrument to promote European agricultural resources, while preserving the elements of “diversity, quality and wealth, sources of added value which will benefit both consumers and producers, the two key players to go beyond standardizing food products”.

Ciolos moves the focus to respect for nature, hoping that “our collective practices lead to regenerating nature rather than destroying it” and the concept of competitiveness “should not be measured only on an economic scale: to be competitive it is necessary to know how to economize by regenerating our resources”, convinced that European agriculture, together with the producers and consumers, should be developed, but not at the expense of renewing natural resources.

His closing statement is about “tradition”, “an opportunity”, Ciolos said, “because food is not only nourishment for the body, it is also culture and food for the soul”.
