A record quotation for Masseto Ornellaia - 9597.20 euros for an imperial bottle 2006, sold at the Gelardini & Romani Wine Auction on October 8th in Rome. The results of the first competitive sale of the major Italian auction house specialized in wine were quite flattering, with 93% of the base catalogue value being sold and an average raise of 42% from starting prices, for a total income of more than 205.000 Euros.
These results confirm the strength of the market for “fine wines and collectibles” placing them among the economic realities farthest from the crisis, at a time when the entire Western economy seems totally upset. In times of market uncertainty, they represent a safe harbor in alternative investment routes. And, on the heels of the results of this sale Gelardini & Romani announce they have decided to have an auction with only Italian wines next November 19th in Hong Kong, the world capital of Fine Wines, that can boast a 2010 turnover of over 400 million euros on wine auctions alone. Masseto of the Ornellaia Estate was virtually unchallenged at the auction held in Rome receiving all the highest awards - a first place for an Imperial Masseto 2006 at 9597.20 euros and second place for a double magnum Bolgheri Merlot at 2399.30 euros.
The flagship wine of the Marchesi Frescobaldi company is probably the only one that has achieved continual success not only at Italian but also international auctions from New York to London, Singapore to Hong Kong and is, no ifs ands or buts, the best known Italian wine among collectors all over the world.
The Gelardini & Romani auction also brought the so-called SuperTuscans back into the spotlight giving them top awards that “grate” with the most important 2012 editions of Italian and restaurant guides that did not always give them their due. The prototypes of Sassicaia, “Sassicaia before Sassicaia” created by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta registered a remarkable success - a 1967 bottle sold at 2279.34 euros and a 1964 sold at 1919.44 euros. These prices are much higher than any other Italian wine ever sold on any auction sale worldwide. They are even better than the great Bordeaux and Burgundy wines that have finally seen their prices re-stabilized after 2 years of incredible increases, which had reached prohibitive quotations.
