The fine wine market is a niche in the large general market of wine. Apart from being the segment, of course, with the highest added value, it is also the one that contributes in a decisive way to make wine a sought after product, increasingly associated with well-being and hedonism. And it is growing, not only in the absolute values it moves, but also in the number of “wine actors” who are protagonists of this particular wine stage. According to Liv-Ex data, the main platform for monitoring the secondary market, in fact, in just 8 years the number of individual wines (label and vintage) exchanged has practically quadrupled, going from 1,644 in 2010 to 6,122 in 2018. A record that seems to be bound to be broken again in 2019, considering that in just over half a year there are already 4,924 labels. And if among the territories the great rulers are Bordeaux (2,268 wines in 2018, out of 1,126 in 2010), and Burgundy (1,580 labels, compared to 248 in 2019), Italy is on the podium in third place, thanks to a “extraordinary” growth in the number of its references of fine wines “recorded” by Liv-Ex, from just 61 in 2010, to 617 in 2018, more than 10 times as much. A long-term trend, which is also confirmed in 2019, where the index Italy 100, formed by the most recent physical vintages of Sassicaia, Masseto, Solaia (Antinori), Tignanello (Antinori), Ornellaia, Barbaresco di Gaja, Barolo Monfortino Riserva and Barolo Cascina Francia by Giacomo Conterno, Guado al Tasso (Antinori) and Redigaffi di Tua Rita, recorded a growth of +2.4%, a clear countertrend to the 0.9% of the Liv-Ex 100, reference index, and even -2% of the Liv-Ex 1000. With Italian wines increasingly present in the same Liv-Ex 100: as announced in recent days by the platform, the current Italian “members” of the club of the best performing labels, namely Masseto 2014, Ornellaia 2013 and 2015, Sassicaia 2014 and 2015, Tignanello 2015 and Barolo Monfortino Riserva 2010 di Giacomo Conterno, are also about to add Masseto 2015, Sassicaia 2016, Solaia 2015, Tignanello 2016, Barolo 2014 di Bartolo Mascarello, Barolo Villero 2013 Brovia and Sperss 2013 di Gaja.
