The growth of Prosecco in the world, from Italy’s point of view, seems to threaten the dominance of Champagne, on a commercial level. But is it really so? Not according to Thierry Gasco, chef de cave of one of the most well known French brands, Pommery, who explained the differences between the two most famous bubbly drinks in the world to WineNews.
"No, I do not think there really is rivalry with Prosecco, because Champagne has nothing to fear. It is true that the products are similar as they are both sparkling wines, but their positioning is completely different. Champagne has reached nobility level for many years, and now just needs to work to improve. Moreover, 4 billion bottles of sparkling wine per year arrive on global markets and on average 360 million bottles of Champagne are produced; so, I'd say there's room for both, due also to the differences between the two products.
And do you not believe that in the future, with the new generation, the landscape could change? “Of course, if you think of younger consumers, and their need to look primarily at the price, Prosecco is much more affordable than Champagne, I agree. But I think the point is a different one: young people today approach the world of bubbles with Prosecco, but when they grow up and have more buying power, they will discover Champagne”.
