In the land of Prosecco, the driving force of Italian wine exports in recent years, they are crossing fingers and touching wood that the period of the year in which climatic conditions can drastically compromise production is hopefully over. This is precisely the reason that the harvest reserve set aside to manage eventual production shortages is actually useless. So, the assembly of the Prosecco DOC Consortium has decided to reclassify it, and in doing so those wines will no longer be able to become Prosecco. The decision to protect the values of wine and denominations was made at the Shareholders Meeting upon seeing the findings of the Board of Directors, examining market trends, the amount of stocks and the state of health of the vineyards. Therefore, according to precise regional laws of the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia Regions, in view of regulating sales and maintaining prices above certain values, the shareholders have given a mandate to the president to request that the agro-food management of the two Regions “reclassify” the hectoliters of the Prosecco reserve to “white wine with or without a geographical indication”. They are talking about a quantity of around 600.000 hectoliters of wine. Only the component of harvest reserves destined to become organic Prosecco will be excluded from the request.
