U.S.A.: WINE COVERS 17.1% OF THE ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES MARKET (19.92 BILLION DOLLARS) AND IS GAINING GROUND ON BEER, WHICH IS STILL AMERICANS’ FAVORITE DRINK (49.2% OF THE MARKET) FOLLOWED BY HARD LIQUOR (33.6%)

People are drinking more and more wine in the States. The “Distilled Spirits Council” recently confirmed that in the alcoholic beverages sector the wine share grew 4% in 2011, taking away a considerable number of consumers from America’s favorite drink, beer.
Thanks to the economic recovery, exports and the many different tastes of wine, it’s value in the States today is 19.92 billion dollars, equal to 17.1% of the alcohol market, where beer continues to dominate at 49.2%. Wine takes third place: beer is first then hard liquor at 33.6%, for a total value of 59.24 billion dollars and in the last 13 years has continually chipped away at the beer market. This fact doesn’t seem to bother the president of the Beer Institute Joe McClain who reminds us “beer continues to be Americans’ favorite alcoholic beverage, and has the highest share of the market in quantity and value, over wine and hard liquor”.
