“If you want something to be said, ask a man, if you want something done, ask a woman” are the words that the international press has said were spoken by Margaret Thatcher, the first woman Prime Minister in England, who left an indelible mark on British as well as European history. Fortunately, there are more and more women who really “have done” something important, in Italy as well, and many of these women are related to the wine sector. The women protagonists selected by Forbes magazine on its list “The 100 successful Italian women in 2019” include also many great women in the wine world. For example, there is Marilisa Allegrini, who is at the helm of her historic family business, one of the leading brands of Amarone della Valpolicella that has also put down roots in other prestigious wine territories such as Montalcino (San Polo) and Bolgheri (Poggio al Tesoro). There is also Francesca Moretti, head of the wine division of the Terra Moretti Group, which owns two symbolic wineries in Franciacorta, Bellavista and Contadi Castaldi, as well as other prestigious companies such as Sella & Mosca, the historic winery in Sardinia, Petra, the winery designed by Mario Botta, Suvereto, Teruzzi (formerly Teruzzi & Puthod), the historic Vernaccia di San Gimignano, as well as Acquagiusta, in Maremma. Another woman of the 100 selected is Francesca Terragni, Director of Marketing and Communication for Moët Hennessy Italia, the wine & spirits division of the luxury giant LVMH, which owns brands such as Moët & Chandon champagne, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Dom Pérignon and Krug, among others.
Additionally, there is Rita Gagliardini, CEO of Enovetro, a company specializing in the production of bottles and wine accessories in the province of Ancona, in the Marche Region, and also Micaela Pallini, president and CEO of the historic Pallini Liquor Company in Rome. And further, from the food world there is Sonia Peronaci, writer, cook and founder of “Giallo Zafferano”, as well as Chiara Rota, founder of MyCookingBox, a young Milan company offering packages that include the ingredients to prepare some of the most popular Italian regional recipes at home.
These names stand very proudly alongside such celebrities as the astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, the journalist and director of Huffington Post Italia, Lucia Annunziata, and her colleague, Lilly Gruber, sports champions such as the soccer player Sara Gama (captain of Juventus and the National teams) or the diver Tania Cagnotto, as well as actresses like Paola Cortellesi and Valeria Golino, or TV personalities such as the late Nadia Toffa, or economists of the caliber of Annamaria Lusardi, just to name a few.
